Description:
Join us in person as we celebrate Fern Khan’s new memoir, Through Jamaican Lenses: A Memoir. During the event, Khan will share about her joyful upbringing in Jamaica, what led her to the United States, and her exceptional life and career.
Copies of Through Jamaican Lenses: A Memoir will be available for purchase on the evening of the salon. They are also available for purchase through Bookshop, University Press of Mississippi, and Barnes & Noble.
Refreshments will be provided.
About Fern Khan
Fern Khan has a long and rich history at Bank Street. In addition to being a parent of School for Children alumni, Fern served as the Dean of the Division of Continuing Education for 22 years. In this role, Fern provided leadership and overall management for the division’s wide range of programs, including Liberty LEADS and Bank Street Head Start. Fern also worked with Bank Street alumna Carol B. Hillman in co-coordinating 17 Long Trips to places where social or educational reform was happening.
Before Bank Street, Fern served as the associate dean for LaGuardia Community College’s Division of Adult and Continuing Education for over 17 years. There she developed and supervised several diverse programs, including the first comprehensive educational Program for Deaf Adults in New York City. She is the 1987 recipient of the Herbert Lehman Award in Administration from the New York League for the Hard of Hearing, the Priscilla Pemberton Society’s Service Awards, and the Women’s City Club of New York Civic Spirit Award in 2011. In 2018, she received Bank Street’s Ida Karp Award “for outstanding dedication to Bank Street College and its mission.” Fern received her BSc in Sociology in 1962 and a Master’s in Social Work in 1964 from New York University. She has three adult sons, three grandsons, and a granddaughter.
