Event Title:
Lunchtime Learning Series | Mapping for Civic Engagement: How Mapping Inquiry Can Energize Participation, Build Empathy, and Support Spatial Justice with Abby Kerlin

Description:
This talk explores how geographic thinking serves as a foundation for civic engagement from early childhood onward. When a third-grader makes a mental map of the corners of her playground she instinctively avoids, she’s engaging in the same essential practice of spatial problem-solving that citizens use to understand belonging, access, and opportunity in their communities. We’ll examine how K-8 teachers can build on children’s embodied geographic observations to develop the spatial literacy necessary for questioning and reimagining the landscapes of power that shape civic life.
