Event Title:
2025 Biber Convocation featuring Nawal Qarooni, Educator and Author| Building Nourishing Collaborations: Exalting Our Children and Their Caregivers

Description:
How do we engage families in equitable ways that include all of their ways of being? How do we ensure we don’t inadvertently alienate the families we serve, given our own diverse experiences? Nawal Qarooni will share ways to build nourishing family collaborations throughout the school year, thinking across curriculum, school events, texts and shared family experiences, ensuring that we expand the definitions of not only literacy but also family and caregiving. Drawing from years of research in family engagement across the country, Nawal will provide a framework and examples from school sites who are shifting the ways we interact with and invite families into our circle of collective care.

The Barbara Biber Convocation is an annual event that serves as the centerpiece of the Bank Street Graduate School of Education orientation and a welcome for incoming graduate students. The event provides an opportunity for the College community to engage with seminal thinkers on leading issues in education. The esteemed lecture honors the contributions Barbara Biber to both Bank Street and the wider educational community. Dr. Biber was a central figure shaping the institution that evolved from the Bureau of Educational Experiments to become Bank Street College. A keen observer of children and classrooms who immersed herself in the phenomena of children’s and teachers’ lives, her writings achieved a rare depth of insight and conceptual elegance. As a researcher and scholar, she continuously reexamined and refined her thinking. This lecture memorializes her progressive legacy.

More information can be found on the Biber webpage.
