Dr. Usha Kotelawala joins Bank Street as Program Director and Instructor for the Leadership in Mathematics Education program. Over her career, Usha has taught high school mathematics, coached teachers and leaders, and facilitated professional learning. During a decade in K-12 Teacher Education at Fordham she acquired an NSF Noyce grant enabling cohorts to afford teacher education. She was selected through a CUNY-NYS initiative to develop a mathematics curriculum for struggling learners and to lead the professional learning supporting its implementation. She has recently worked at both public and charter schools across the country focusing on enabling leaders to dive deeper into understanding what they notice and seek out when they observe a math lesson. She earned her undergraduate from Claremont McKenna College and her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University. Inspired by the late Barbara Dubitsky, Usha is honored to continue and extend her work.
