Event Title:
Equity Series | Teaching When the World is on Fire | Dr. Pam Jones

Description:

From Dr. Jones: If the past is prologue, we as a society have found ourselves at yet another juncture marking a watershed moment in our history. Amidst mounting uncertainty and injustice, we are “(re)awakening into rebellion” (Palmer, 2014) and asking ourselves, “What can we do to be change agents in our settings? Where do we start? How do we move from theory to practice?” In my estimation, the current climate calls on us to adopt what I call an ethically subversive stance and practice. I define ethical subversion as “the adoption and enactment of practices that run counter to a dominant and hegemonic structure, or system.” In education, this constitutes service providers’ adoption of dispositions and practices, as well as the cultivation of knowledge(s), fueled by a critical lens on teaching and learning. In its purest form, ethically subversive practice appeals to the Freirean notion that the more unquiet a pedagogy, the more critical it becomes (Freire, 1994, as cited in Richardson, 2003, p. 25).

In this talk, Dr. Jones will invite all in attendance to consider ways to adopt and cultivate an ethically subversive educational practice in their settings. The goal of our time together is to use this information to identify short- and long-term strategies for cultivating your ethically subversive educational practice.
