Emerging research links improvements in non-academic elements of reading such as identity, self-efficacy, engagement, and motivation to accelerated reading achievement for America’s most vulnerable students.

Part of Bank Street Alumni Weekend 2023, this dynamic keynote will welcome award-winning early childhood educator and Bank Street alum Alvin Irby, GSE ’09, who will share insights from his work cultivating the reading identity of Black boys and leveraging technology to design strengths-based reading programming and assessments as the Founder and Chief Reading Inspirer at Barbershop Books.

Food and beverages will be provided.

About Alvin Irby

Alvin IrbyAlvin Irby is an award-winning early childhood educator, social entrepreneur, TED speaker, comedian, and author. He is the founder and chief reading inspirer at Barbershop Books, a national literacy non-profit that inspires Black boys and other vulnerable children to read for fun. Irby has been recognized for his work expanding book access for children, including the National Book Foundation’s Innovations in Reading Prize, PepsiCo Foundation/Doritos Black Changemakers Award, and the SXSW Community Service Award. His popular TED Talk, “How to inspire every child to be a life-long reader,” has been viewed over one million times. Irby is passionate about helping educators, librarians, and caregivers create learning experiences and environments that inspire children to identify as readers and to read for fun. Irby earned an MS in Childhood Education from Bank Street Graduate School of Education, an MPA in Public and Nonprofit Management and Policy from New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service, and a BA in Sociology from Grinnell College.
