The 2024 Niemeyer Series Featuring Crystal R. Sanders, PhD
“More than Cookies and Crayons: Head Start and the Mississippi Black Freedom Struggle”

Description:
The Niemeyer Series comprises lectures and symposia focused on urgent matters of educational interest. The Series is dedicated to the memory of John H. Niemeyer for his leadership in helping Bank Street College of Education become a national voice for children beyond practice and into policy.

This year’s event will honor the May 17 70th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision and celebrate the Black women advocates who started the Head Start program.

The evening will begin with a performance of Why Teach? at 5:50 PM by the talented Epic Theatre Ensemble, a youth artist, researcher, and facilitator team that shines a light on the science, art, and activism of teaching. Following the performance will be a presentation by Crystal R. Sanders, PhD,  Associate Professor of African American Studies, Emory University, on “More than Cookies and Crayons: Head Start and the Mississippi Black Freedom Struggle.” Dr. Sanders’ lecture will be live streamed, starting at approximately 6:45 PM.
