New York City is an exciting place around the holidays. There are lots of festive things to do from the tree at Rockefeller Center to the window displays at Macy’s. I would like to share with you some unique holiday things to do around the city with a graduate student budget in mind.
The Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden
Exciting for all ages, the Botanical Garden has model trains surrounded by a miniature New York City featuring landmarks made out of natural materials!
American Ballet Theatre’s The Nutcraker at BAM
The Nutcraker is a holiday favorite but tickets can be pretty pricey. Last year I saw the American Ballet Theatre’s production at BAM in Brooklyn and it was fantastic. AND tickets were only $20!
Vintage Holiday Subway Train
This has become a holiday tradition for my husband and me. Every Sunday between Thanksgiving and New Years the MTA runs a vintage train along the M line. For the cost of a single subway trip you can ride a subway car from the 1930s-60s. A schedule and route of the train can be found here.
Bryant Park
Not only is there ice-skating, which is much less expensive than the touristy Rockefeller Center rink, but there is also a huge holiday craft fair featuring unique holiday gifts! I always stop by when doing my Christmas shopping.
I hope you all have a happy holiday season and safe travels to anyone heading back home for the holidays!
